The Lagos State Government has suspended the issuance of building permits along the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway corridor, affirming the need to align the capital project with the state’s physical development plans.

This decision was announced by the Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, through a statement issued by the Director of Public Affairs of the ministry, Mr. Mukaila Sanusi.

According to Dr. Olumide, the suspension is necessary due to the high impact of the ongoing coastal highway project on the state’s recently submitted urban planning initiatives. These initiatives plans include the Ode-Omi Action Area Plan, the Ibeju-Lekki Model City Plan, and the Lekki Comprehensive Master Plan, which are at different stages of development.

The Commissioner explained that the decision to suspend building permits is paramount to prevent any further distortion to the state’s development plans as the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA) has been directed to enforce the suspension until further notice.

This move is aimed at ensuring that the state’s development plans are not compromised by the construction of the coastal highway. Dr. Olumide emphasized that the suspension does not affect the state’s broader plans for a structured and sustainable environment, adding that the state stands to gain more from the coastal highway once completed.

The coastal highway project is expected to have a significant impact on the state’s economy and development. When completed, it is expected to improve access to ports and other economic hubs, boost trade and commerce, and create new opportunities for businesses and residents. However, the state government recognizes the need to ensure that the project is aligned with its development plans to maximize its benefits.

The suspension of building permits is a proactive measure to prevent haphazard development and ensure that the state’s development plans are implemented in a sustainable and structured manner. The state government is committed to ensuring that the coastal highway project contributes to the state’s economic growth and development, while also protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development.

The Lagos State Government’s decision to suspend building permits along the coastal highway corridor demonstrates its commitment to responsible urban planning and development. By aligning the highway project with its development plans, the state government aims to create a more sustainable and livable environment for its residents. This move is expected to have a positive impact on the state’s economy and development in the long run.

In conclusion, the suspension of building permits along the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway corridor is a necessary step to ensure that the state’s development plans are implemented in a sustainable and structured manner. The Lagos State Government’s commitment to responsible urban planning and development is expected to have a positive impact on the state’s economy and environment, and will contribute to creating a more livable and sustainable environment for its residents.
