A consortium of geologists from Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, and the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, has set in motion efforts aimed at reinvigorating the hydrocarbon and minerals potential of Nigeria state.
Towards unlocking these potential, the team has paid a courtesy visit to Niger State Hydrocarbon and Solid Minerals Development Agency (NSHSMDA).
The team was led by Professor Idris Nda of FUT Minna, and were warmly received by Dr. Ndajiya Abdullahi Nma, Director General of NSHSMDA, along with key stakeholders from the state’s Ministry of Mineral Resources and Secretary to the Government office ably represented by Mallam Danladi Buhari.
Speaking on behalf of the visiting team, Prof. Nda stated that the purpose of the visit was to provide an update on previous research and exploration activities carried out in Bida Basin.
He highlighted that the initial phase of the hydrocarbon exploration project began during the administration of former Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, with leadership provided by the late M.I. Wushishi and support from the Etsu Nupe.
Prof. Nda recalled that under the previous administration of former Governor Abubakar Sani Bello, a consulting firm—White Page International Concept Limited—was engaged to advance exploration work in the Basin.
A supervisory committee, headed by then-Commissioner for Planning, Mohammed Nda was constituted to oversee the consultant’s activities.
He noted that their team also collaborated with the federal government in environmental, geological, and geophysical studies, which culminated in a 2D seismic survey conducted by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) in 2020.
“We are here to update the agency on the progress made and to chart a path forward in partnership.
“Our aim is to ensure collaboration that aligns with the state government’s goals, especially under the newly established Agency,” Prof. Nda said.
He further disclosed that the team has developed strategic implementation plans focused on evaluating the state’s solid mineral resources, estimating their economic value, and exploring their potentials to generate revenue, create employment, and attract investment.
According to the team leader ,their current studies, he said, involve a holistic mapping of mineral deposits and recommendations for sustainable resource development.
In his remarks, Dr. Ndajiya, the Director General of NSHSMDA, welcomed the team and expressed the Agency’s willingness to work closely with the universities.
He emphasized Governor Umaru Bago’s support for the initiatives, noting that the governor is fully aware of the work done by the academic institutions in the Bida Basin over the years.
“The governor is ready to collaborate. This meeting is a significant step toward a long-lasting partnership that will benefit not only Niger State but future generations,” Dr. Ndajiya said.
He urged the team to submit a detailed proposal identifying data requirements to enable efficient execution of their activities.
Also speaking at the meeting, Director of Oil and Gas at the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Mallam Mamud Abdulmalik, advised the team to come up with a comprehensive project report and implementation work plan.
He stressed that a well-structured submission to the governor could elevate the project to national attention, potentially influencing the federal level.
“You need to work with a clear road map—register your efforts, get the necessary permits, and ensure your findings are well documented,” Abdulmalik advised.
In the closing remarks, the Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Mineral Resources, Alhaji Yunusa Nahauni, commended the universities for their dedication.
He assured them of the government’s continued support and encouraged them to submit strategic concept notes and proposals that demonstrate commitment and clarity of purpose.
“The government is happy with your efforts. The door is always open. All we need is your firm commitment and a clear plan to move this project forward,” he concluded.
The visit marks a significant step in aligning academic research with governmental policy and execution, potentially unlocking the full hydrocarbon and minerals potential of Bida Basin for Niger State and Nigeria at large.
