By: Goodluck E. Adubazi, Abuja.

The role and contributions of women to the advancement of the aviation sector cannot be overemphasized. Their impact is not only commendable but also significant, especially in light of the adoption of automation and self-service facilitation.

It must be reiterated that technology and its various facets have contributed significantly to transforming the nation’s aviation sector.

Furthermore, the government’s deliberate policies on technology and innovation have provided the necessary guidance to support women in achieving their dreams across various human endeavours.

“The role of technology in the contemporary world cannot be overemphasized. Today, technology is at the core of sectoral performance and serves as the most critical component of any nation’s growth and development. This is why Women in Aviation International Nigeria, Ministry Chapter, of the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, organized a two-day sensitization program themed ‘Technology Development of Women in the Aviation Industry’, scheduled for June 18–19, 2025, at the National Merit House, Maitama, Abuja.”

Delivering a welcome speech, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, emphasized the importance of technology in the aviation sector.

Speaking at the two-day workshop, Kana highlighted that technology has become a vital driver of growth and innovation in the sector. He encouraged women in aviation to embrace technological advancements to remain relevant and contribute meaningfully to national development.

Kana, represented by the Director of Human Resources and Director of Operations in the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Sani Bello Torankawa, commended the event’s organizers for bringing together aviation professionals to evaluate the impact of technology.

“I feel elated to stand before you on behalf of the Permanent Secretary to grace this important and impactful sensitization programme focusing on the importance of technology, organized by the Aviation Chapter of Women in Aviation,” he stated.

He added, “Distinguished guests and ladies, I reflected upon the theme of this occasion and reaffirm that the role of technology in today’s world cannot be overstated. It is central to sectoral performance and national development. In the aviation sector, the contributions of women are both commendable and significant, especially considering the rise in automation and self-service systems.”

He assured the organizers that the Ministry’s management would continue to support and guide all partners, including Women in Aviation, as well as other affiliated bodies such as the sports club and labour unions operating under the Ministry’s purview.

Dr. Kana concluded with words of appreciation to the organizers and partners for initiating a programme that brings aviation professionals together to discuss the importance of technology. “It is hoped that the deliberations and insights from experienced resource persons and participants will reinforce the centrality of technology as it relates to women in aviation,” he said.

Earlier, Standard Times Nigeria reported that the Chairperson/Coordinator of Women in Aviation, Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Engr. Nzekwe Miriam Ifeoma (Mrs), in her welcome remarks, urged women in aviation to embrace the wind of change through cutting-edge technological solutions and pursue learning with enthusiasm.

Engr. Nzekwe noted that women in the aviation sector have broken barriers, competed effectively with their counterparts, and excelled across various specialties. “This event aims to reaffirm the importance of technology and emphasize why women must take deliberate steps to increase their involvement in the sector using technology,” she remarked.

“You will agree with me that the human factor plays a critical and indispensable role in the growth and development of every enterprise,” she continued. “Today’s event focuses on examining and appreciating the relevance of technology adoption for women in aviation.”

She further stated, “In today’s technology-driven world, a poor understanding of basic tech tools results in setbacks—as we’ve seen across different sectors of Nigeria’s economy. I therefore urge all participants to embrace the wind of change with cutting-edge technology and a strong desire to learn,” she advised.

Engr. Nzekwe concluded her remarks by expressing her sincere expectations that the invited resource persons would not only educate and enlighten participants about the indispensability of technology in the workplace but also highlight best practices for operating in a tech-driven environment. She extended a warm welcome to all attendees and wished them a rewarding two-day engagement.

Speaking to Standard Times Nigeria, Engr. Nzekwe said, “The Women in Aviation International, Nigerian Ministry Chapter, organized this programme to advance technological development and promote the inclusion of women in the aviation industry. Our objective is to catch girls young and mentor them on the diverse career opportunities available in aviation,” she explained.

The organizers pointed out that girls remain underrepresented in the aviation sector and must be encouraged to pursue careers in areas such as piloting, engineering, air traffic control, aviation law, and safety systems.

Mrs. Sheba Bello, an air traffic controller and instructor at the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria, encouraged women to believe in themselves and pursue aviation careers.

In an interview with Standard Times Nigeria, Mrs. Sheba emphasized that women should not be discouraged by perceived industry challenges. She advised them to surround themselves with supportive people, stay committed to their goals, and believe in their potential.

According to her, with dedication and focus, women can thrive and achieve success in aviation.
