Bloodbath as suspected armed herders invade Benue communities

Many residents have been feared killed in a suspected coordinated attacks on Yelwata and Daudu communities in the Guma Local Government Area of Benue State

It was learnt that over 200 people including one Mr. John Omorogieva, a mechanized farmer and five security officers in Yelwata were killed in the attack which started on Friday, June 15th, 2025 night and continued to the early hours of Saturday.

Speaking with newsmen on the sad development, one Omorogieva Adesuwa Sophia ‘f’, whose father was killed in the attack suspected to have been carried out by armed herders, said the attackers came from the western part of Yelwata.

She said, “It was a coordinated attack; some Fulani terrorists came from the western part of the Yelwata and started shooting and by the time policemen and young people tried to engage them, another group came from the eastern part of the community. They overran those trying to resist them.

“They killed my father and many other people; you know some people do sleep in their stalls. They poured petrol on their stalls in the market and burnt them.

“In those stalls, we had people who moved from places like Branch Udei and people displaced from nearby villages, who slept in the stalls because of the proximity to the police and soldiers there.

“As of now, from the names they are putting together, and families that were burnt and killed are running to over 200. They killed and burnt people in their houses. They will pour petrol and burn the whole place where people are sleeping.

“Many families were burnt to death by the rampaging herders. It was s a terrible sight.”

Sophia, who was weeping uncontrollably apparently over the murder of her father while speaking with newsmen in Benin, lamented that the family are yet to see their sister, Herretta Omorogieva after the attack.

Sophia, stated that the development has thrown her family into serious fear while mourning the death of their family same time.

She maintained that following the attack on their community in Benue, she and ageing mother had to run to Edo, their State of origin for safety as the suspected armed herders continued to threatening the people.
