Mokwa flood disaster: 151 bodies recover so far – Niger Gov’t

Niger state government has confirmed that only 151 bodies have so far been recovered from the flash flood while appealing to the federal government to urgently provide more support towards the intervention to the communities and victims in Mokwa local government area of the state.

The State Deputy Governor, Yakubu Garba made the plea when he received the federal government delegation led by the Minister for Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris Malagi and Minister for Humanitarian Affairs, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatdo at government house in Minna on behalf of governor Mohammed Umar Bago.

He disclosed that in the interim reports: 151 bodies recovered and buried, 318 people were displaced, 513 households and 268 houses affected, 3 communities affected were Tiffin Maza and Anguwan hausawa of Mokwa town and Rabba where 36 bodies was recovered, 11 persons injured while 2 roads and 2 bridges were washed away during the flooding.

According to the deputy governor, assessment is still ongoing on the required needs and taking stock hence the state government has approved for distribution 6,000 bags of rice and other essential materials to cushion the effects of the disaster on the victims.

Yakubu Garba further emphasized that the federal government prompt intervention in the areas of temporary camp and taking assessments of the communities in order to proffer solutions to the menace.

He added that the actual causes of the flooding is still sketchy. Just as he Applauded the federal government swift response with the presence of NEMA as well as other relevant organizations.

Earlier, the Minister for Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohamed Idris Malagi expressed the Federal Government profound sorrow over the devastating flood disaster which has tragically claimed the lives of several persons in Mokwa local government area of Niger state.

Mohammed Idris noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been fully briefed on the situation and has directed all relevant emergency and security agencies to intensify ongoinghe immediate priority of the Federal Government is to save lives and provide urgent relief to survivors through NEMA which is ongoing.

According to Idris, the Federal Government have extends its heartfelt condolences to the Niger state government, families of the victims in this moment of grief, the nation stands united with them in solidarity.
