Heavy downpour wracks havoc in Mokwa town – NSEMA

Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has confirmed the report of a deadly flood disaster that ravaged two communities of Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa in Mokwa town of Mokwa Local government area of the state after a heavy downpour.

The incident occurred Wednesday night during a torrential downpour of very high intensity that lasted several hours.

It was gathered that the surging flood water submerged and washed away over 50 residential houses with their occupants.

In response, the Agency, in collaboration with Mokwa Local Authority, local divers and very brave volunteers are conducting search and rescue operations to rescue survivors and recover corpses.

However as at last count, only three survivors (a woman and her 2 children) are receiving treatment for wounds and shock at Mokwa general.

It was also confirmed that 21 corpses have sofar been recovered of those who sadly loss their lives in the incidence while over 10 persons are still missing as search and rescue operation is still ongoing.

The Director General of the Agency, Alhaji Abdullahi Arab confirmed this to newsmen in Minna on Thursday after saying the only highway linking the Northern parts of the country and Southern has been cutting off for now.
