Stakeholders in the construction sector have recalled experts and professionals to intensify forward-thinking innovation for smart Lagos city as they affirmed that the sectors are lagging in the digital revolution with their contribution to driving economic growth.
The stakeholders stated this at the Lagos Architects’ Forum 160, themed ‘Digital Transformation in Architecture – Building Smart Cities.” said the construction sector is significantly contributing to economic growth, directly through gross domestic product formation and by supporting other sectors.
Chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Architects, Lagos State Chapter, Arch. Abiodun Fatuyi noted that Lagos is a vibrant and dynamic megacity, but the challenges of urbanization require rapid innovation and advanced visionary solutions.
Arch. Fatuyi said, “We are experiencing the high-quality, transformative power of technology across all sectors in Lagos, and architecture is not left out. Digital tools, from advanced modeling software and virtual reality to big data analytics and artificial intelligence, are reshaping the way we design, plan, and construct our built environment.
“Hence provides us with a special platform to explore these advancements, to learn from global experts, to share our own experiences, and to envision leveraging digital transformation to build a smarter, more sustainable Lagos for all Nigerians.”
The Special Adviser to the Governor in the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, Lagos State, Adekunle Olayinka, said, “COVID-19 accelerated digital transformation in all sectors, prompting managers to leverage digital tools for organizational efficiency and business continuity. Digitalization is not only a channel for rapid increase but also an adaptation of digital technologies in the operational methods of organization construction.
“Organisations construction are still in the process of adapting to changes brought about by digital transformation, which results in a lack of standardized procedures or well-defined frameworks to facilitate the systematic and efficient integration of technologies as some technologies have not yet achieved an optimal level of economic efficiency, making them less cost-effective compared to other available solutions.”
He added, “the early stage of research on digital transformation in the construction industry and field fragmentation, integrative review methodology and systematic research are needed. There must be a holistic understanding of the digital transformation in architecture as an originator and pilot of all construction work.
It is instructive to state that the government will not relent in its efforts, playing its role in ensuring digital transformation in all sectors; moreover, as a government, we will not relent in our efforts to build smarter cities through strategic project management and systematic processes. Lagos State Government is mindful of the importance of professional bodies, especially the NIA Lagos Chapter collaboration, helping the government to navigate the storm through an innovative approach and skill exchange amongst other sister professionals.”
