The Director-General of the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP), Barr. Abiageli E. Amadiobi, has asked Nigerian MSMEs to be proud of being Nigerian and advised them to always put a ‘Made in Nigeria’ stamp on their products.
This was disclosed at a one-day workshop held on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, in Abuja.
According to a Standard Times Nigeria correspondent, the NOTAP DG said, “The core message of this one-day workshop, commemorating the African Day for Technology and IPRs with the theme ‘Promotion of Indigenous Inventors and the Crucial Role of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) in Technology Development,’ is to make public the work of Nigerian inventors and innovators and help them promote their innovations and inventions and commercialize them so that they can benefit.”
She urged them to always patent their inventions, stating, “If you invent something and believe it’s original, it should be patented. Once patented, it becomes yours, and nobody can register it again except you. That’s the aspect we commercialize.”
She added, “When you agree to patent, we pay for it. Once you patent, it means you’re the originator of the product, and we can help you commercialize it.”
The NOTAP DG emphasized the importance of technology in national advancement, noting that 50% of foreign technology transfer transactions in Nigeria are IP-based.
She advised MSMEs to be proud of being Nigerian by putting a ‘Made in Nigeria’ stamp on their products.
Mr. Lawrence Nzenagu, Director of Triple i Summit and former President of ANI, attributed the lack of funding as a major challenge faced by inventors, researchers, and innovators in Nigeria.
Dr. Sadeeq Mohammed and Dr. Marvelous I. Aigbedion called for the commercialization and promotion of MSME products in Nigeria.
The panelists agreed on the need for a structured system to recognize outstanding inventors and innovators through national honors.
The NOTAP DG promised to establish Technology Hubs across the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria, with over 1,000 patents facilitated for Nigerian researchers and innovators and 67 IPTOs established.
