Industry Ministry moves against corruption to strengthen public service integrity

The Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment (FMITI) has moved against corruption in the public service, by inaugurating its Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU). This move aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, prioritizing ethical governance for national development¹.

The ACTU, according to a press statement from the Director, Press and Public Relations, FMITI, Dr Thomas Adebayo is designed to strengthen transparency, accountability, and integrity within the Ministry, ensuring a corruption-free environment. Its key objectives include.

The aiim of the Ministry is to: ensure compliance with budget provisions and guidelines; to conduct preliminary investigations into corruption allegations and reporting to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and; develope and enforce codes of ethics and conduct for staff; educate staff on anti-corruption policies and procedures.

However, the ICPC provides strategic guidance and support to the ACTU, ensuring effective implementation of its mandate. The Commission has established ACTUs in over 445 Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to combat corruption in the public service.

Reacting, Ambassador Nura Abba Rimi, Permanent Secretary of FMITI, emphasized the importance of the ACTU in the fight against corruption, describing it as a cornerstone of the Federal Government’s stance against corruption. ICPC Chairman Dr. Musa Aliyu SAN commended FMITI for its proactive step in inaugurating the ACTU, highlighting its critical role in upholding ethical standards.

The inauguration of the ACTU is expected to enhance FMITI’s institutional reforms and contribute to a corruption-free environment. By promoting discipline and integrity across the Ministry, the ACTU will uphold principles of ethical conduct and professionalism in service delivery.
