World Cup Qualifier: Osimhen brace fires Super Eagles to 2-0 win over Rwanda

Victor Osimhen scored a first-half brace as the Super Eagles of Nigeria reignited their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification hopes with a commanding 2-0 victory over Rwanda in Kigali. The win handed Eric Chelle his first victory as Super Eagles coach and provided a much-needed boost to Nigeria’s campaign.

After a sluggish start to the qualifiers with three draws and one loss, Nigeria entered the match needing a crucial win to climb the standings. The Super Eagles dominated possession from the outset, pressing high and testing the Rwandan defense. Their persistence paid off in the 11th minute when Ademola Lookman whipped in a pinpoint cross, allowing Osimhen to tap home the opener.

Nigeria pushed for a second, with captain William Troost-Ekong coming close, but his header sailed over the bar. Moses Simon also had a golden opportunity, but his close-range shot was brilliantly parried away by the Rwandan goalkeeper.

Then came the moment of the night—Osimhen’s second goal. Picking up the ball in midfield, the Napoli striker effortlessly weaved past defenders before delivering a clinical finish to double Nigeria’s lead in the 45th minute. Just before halftime, Osimhen struck again, controlling a header from Samuel Chukwueze before racing clear and lobbing the goalkeeper in style. Osimhen, having done the damage, was subbed off in the 77th minute for Tolu Arokodare, who made his Super Eagles debut.

With the 2-0 win, Nigeria now has six points, moving up to fourth place in the standings, just behind Rwanda (seven points). Meanwhile, Lesotho dropped below Nigeria after their 2-0 defeat to South Africa.

The Super Eagles return home to face Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo, on March 25, aiming for back-to-back wins. Rwanda, on the other hand, will look to recover when they host Lesotho on the same day.

With this dominant performance, Nigeria’s World Cup dream is very much alive.
