Obi Mikel Urges Chelsea Boss to Learn from Guardiola

Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has advised Blues manager Enzo Maresca to adopt a more flexible tactical approach, drawing inspiration from Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.

Mikel believes that under Maresca, Chelsea’s playing style has become predictable, making it easier for Premier League opponents to counter their tactics.

Speaking on his podcast, the former Super Eagles captain emphasized the need for adaptability in England’s top flight.

“We’ve been figured out. The Premier League is a league where teams analyze and quickly adapt to stop you from playing the way you prefer,” Mikel said.

“That’s why you must always be ready to adjust. Look at what Guardiola is doing now [City] aren’t always playing 20 passes before attacking. Against Newcastle, they went direct when needed. You have to be innovative and find new ways to win games. Right now, we’re lacking that, and the players seem short of ideas.”

Mikel’s comments follow Chelsea’s disappointing 3-0 loss to Brighton, which saw them drop to sixth place in the Premier League standings
