Nigerian Soldier Wins Bronze at 2025 Invictus Games In Canada

Nigerian Army officer Festus Igube has earned a bronze medal at the ongoing 2025 Invictus Games in Canada, marking a historic achievement for Nigeria.

Igube secured third place in the men’s 50-meter freestyle swimming event, finishing behind competitors from Australia and the United States. His victory marks Nigeria’s first-ever medal at the Invictus Games.

Originally from Ezza North LGA in Ebonyi State, Igube endured a near-fatal ambush by Boko Haram insurgents, which left him severely wounded. Initially presumed dead for three days, he was later found alive and resuscitated, though he lost an arm due to the attack.

His participation in the Invictus Games symbolizes resilience and determination, and his bronze medal is Nigeria’s third overall since the country debuted in the competition in 2022.

President Bola Tinubu is expected to host the Nigerian contingent upon their return, while the people of Ebonyi State have begun celebrating Igube’s achievement.

Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru congratulated Igube, praising his courage, perseverance, and patriotism.

“Winning a bronze medal is a testament to his unwavering determination and resilience,” the governor stated. “Despite losing a hand in the fight against Boko Haram, Festus Igube has demonstrated true bravery and national pride.”

The governor commended Igube’s triumph over adversity and emphasized that his accomplishment serves as an inspiration to many.

“You have made Nigeria proud, and we celebrate your triumph,” Nwifuru concluded.
