The Ogun State Security Network, known as Amotekun, successfully thwarted a robbery on the Odogbolu section of the Lagos-Benin Expressway in the early hours of Sunday.
According to a statement released by the Corps Commander, Brigadier General Alade Adedigba (retd.), Amotekun operatives engaged the armed robbers in a gun duel, resulting in the death of one suspect. Another suspect, Amechie Okoro, was apprehended during the confrontation.
Okoro later led operatives to the gang’s hideout, where another member who had initially escaped from the crime scene was captured. During interrogation, Okoro revealed that he had just been released from Ikoyi Prison the previous Monday. Meanwhile, another arrested suspect, Michael Oko, disclosed that he was recruited into the gang by their leader, known as Awuha.
The Corps Commander confirmed that the suspects belong to a notorious gang terrorizing the Odogbolu axis of the expressway.
Recovered from the suspects were a motorcycle (Lagos registration KTU 668), twelve mobile phones, two locally made pistols, ₦113,050 in cash, a silver wristwatch, and a red headphone.
Further investigations revealed that Michael Oko hails from Anambra State but resides at No. 3, Olufuwa Street, Ago Iwoye, while Okoro, originally from Onitsha, Anambra State, had been living in the Agric area of Ikorodu, Lagos, before his recent release from prison.
The remains of the deceased suspect have been evacuated by the police, while the two arrested individuals will be handed over for further investigation and prosecution.
