Kibet, Hirpa Emerge Victorious at 2025 Lagos City Marathon

Kenya’s Edwin Kibet Koech and Ethiopia’s Guta Meseret Hirpa have claimed victory in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively, at the 2025 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, securing top honors in the prestigious competition.

Koech, who previously won the event in 2023, secured his second title by completing the 42km race in an impressive time of 2 hours and 14 minutes, earning the $50,000 first-place prize.

In the women’s category, Hirpa celebrated her first-ever Lagos City Marathon win, finishing with an unofficial time of 2 hours, 37 minutes, and 4.08 seconds. Her victory ensured an Ethiopian 1-2 finish, while a Kenyan runner secured third place.

The 2025 edition of the marathon saw participation from approximately 37,000 runners across both the 10km and 42km races. Race General Manager and former Nigerian long jumper, Yusuf Ali, stated that participation numbers were based on the distribution of running kits, despite over 60,000 athletes registering for the event.

The marathon commenced at 6:30 am from the National Stadium in Surulere for the 42km race, while the 10km event began at 9:30 am from Grace Garden Event Centre, Lekki. Both races concluded at Eko Atlantic City.

Marking its 10th edition, the Lagos City Marathon holds a World Athletics gold label, with organizers striving for platinum status, an achievement that would make it the first marathon in Africa to reach such a prestigious ranking.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, praised the winners and participants, emphasizing the marathon’s role in showcasing Lagos as a global hub for sports and excellence.

Taking part in the race himself, Sanwo-Olu celebrated the event’s success on his X handle, noting its significance in fostering endurance, determination, and the city’s thriving sports culture.

“The Access Bank Lagos City Marathon is more than a race, it’s a testament to resilience, determination, and the dynamic spirit of Lagos. Thousands of athletes from across the world participated, reinforcing Lagos’ reputation as a center for sporting excellence,” he stated.

He also commended the efforts of the organizers, athletes, and supporters, reaffirming the government’s commitment to hosting world-class sporting events.

“Lagos continues to lead the way in organizing top-tier sporting competitions. We are building a city where sports, tourism, and opportunities flourish,” he added.

Among the standout performers, Nyango Gyang Boyi made history as the first Nigerian to finish the marathon, securing 8th place with a time of 2:25:41.58. His remarkable performance earned him a $4,000 prize, along with the N2 million top award for the fastest Nigerian runner.
