Stampede: Gov’t arrests organisers of Ibadan Children’s funfair
The Oyo State Government has announced the arrest of the organisers of a children’s funfair where a stampede claimed an unknown number of lives on Wednesday.
It was gathered that the event was jointly organised by Queen Naomi Silekunola, ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, and Agidigbo 88.7 FM, Ibadan, owned by Oriyomi Hamzat.
Reacting to the tragic incident, Governor Seyi Makinde, in a statement issued on Wednesday, disclosed that an immediate investigation had been launched.
The statement read, “Earlier today, an incident occurred at Islamic High School, Basorun, the venue of an event organised for families. Sadly, a stampede at the venue led to multiple deaths and injuries.”
Sympathising with the families of the victims, the governor assured that efforts were underway to prevent further casualties and support those affected.
The statement further read, “We have taken steps to ensure no further deaths are recorded at this venue by deploying security agents to restore order. Medical personnel and ambulances have been sent to the scene. The event has been stopped, and attendees have been escorted out of the venue. We are taking all necessary measures to secure the area.”
Governor Makinde also vowed that all parties involved in the incident would be held accountable.
He added: “I want to reassure our people that anyone directly or indirectly responsible for this disaster will face justice. Please remain calm as security agencies investigate this unfortunate incident
