Sister of Escaped Detainee Cries Out, Seeks Protection for Brother’s Life

Nneka Ezenwune, a resident of Mbanasaa Street in Aba South Local Government Area, has sworn an affidavit detailing the escape and continued endangerment of her brother, Ezenwune Anayo Francis, from police custody.

According to the affidavit filed by Ms. Ezenwune, her brother’s life was imperiled following a violent incident involving law enforcement officers. She stated that on October 23, 2024, her brother, along with others, managed to escape during a cell break after he was allegedly “mercilessly beaten and injured” by police officers.

Following the incident, Ms. Ezenwune disclosed that Francis sought medical attention and fled to Northern Nigeria, eventually making his way to the United States. She explained that he left the country due to persistent threats of re-arrest by the police.

In her sworn statement, the deponent expressed deep concern over her brother’s safety, stating unequivocally that his life remains at risk should he return to Aba. The affidavit, according to her, was made in good faith and for official documentation, urging relevant authorities to ensure her brother’s protection.

This development raises serious concerns about the conditions of police custody, detainee rights, and the integrity of the justice system in the region. Human rights groups are being called upon to investigate the claims and provide support to ensure the safety and legal protection of Mr. Ezenwune.

The police have yet to respond to the allegations.
