By Titus Oise, Benin
The Central Bank of Nigeria,CBN,on Tuesday said it supplied about N1bn to banks in Edo State to make available for the public use to ease cash scarcity.
Blaise Ijebor, Director, Risk Management department, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) made this known at a press briefing in Benin City .
Ijebor equally threatened to withdraw the licenses of agents of Point of Sale (PoS) machines for charging customers the normal amount, adding that the approved charge for every N5,000 is N100.
“We are aware that people are doing all sorts of sharp practices and we want to warn them. We are hearing that PoS agents are charging up to 30 per cent to give money.
“We are telling them, especially those who are registered with us, if we catch you, we will inform your bank to withdraw your PoS and your licenses and you will not be able to do the business.
“The charge is N100 for every N5,000. Please don’t get caught. We are going round with the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and if we catch you, we will withdraw your license,” Ijebor said.
“We are expecting a shipment of new notes. When that comes, we will move it into ATMs. I am hoping and praying that those ATMs that are empty now a lot will start working by tomorrow,” he added.
Chris Nehikhare, commissioner for communication and orientation, on his part, said the state government will join hands with the CBN in monitoring the situation with a bid to solving the issue.
