Nasarawa Assembly passes Customary Court Bill into Law
Nasarawa State House of Assembly, has on Tuesday passed into Law a Bill for a Law to Establish the State Customary Courts Law and Other related matters Therein.
Based on the new Law, all Customary and traditional cases will henceforth be handled by the Customary Courts.
Speaker of the House, Balarabe Abdullahi, announced the passage of the Bill into Law during the House proceedings in Lafia, the State Capital.
According to him, the Bill upon its assent by the State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, would strengthen and empower Customary Courts in the area with more powers in order to resolve all issues and disputes relating to the peoples tradition.
He said ” by the new Law Customary Courts are vested with the jurisdiction to hear and determine both criminal and civil cases under the native Law and custom”.
The Speaker then directed the Clerk of the House to produce a clean copy of the Bill and send same to the governor for his assent.
Earlier the Majority Leader of the House, Tanko Tunga (APC-Awe North), moved a motion for the Bill to scale third reading, which was seconded by the Minority Leader of the House, Abel Bala (PDP- Nassarawa Eggon West).
The Lawmakers thereafter unanimously passed the Bill into Law .
